When the CMA launched its online gambling investigation in October 2016 (on which we reported at the time), it asked consumers to provide further information and evidence on the concerns it had highlighted. In light of the information provided, it wrote to certain additional operators and is now also requesting information on certain issues relating to free bet promotions.
In an update published today, 18 January, it has expressed its particular concern about information it has received suggesting that players may be placing sports bets, which according to the terms of a promotion qualify them for a free bet, only later to be told they are not eligible for the promotion. David Clifton provided some recent examples of this in his October 2016 Licensing Expert article for SBC News.
The CMA has said that it will be providing another update in April. You can monitor progress of the investigation on its website at https://www.gov.uk/cma-cases/online-gambling
