The RGA has called on the Government to introduce a statutory levy to replace the current system of voluntary funding for research, education, and treatment of problem gambling and to ensure that the National Responsible Gambling Strategy is properly funded.
Its rationale for so doing is described in its press release (that can be downloaded below) as being its belief that the current voluntary funding system is no longer fit for purpose. This represents a change from its previous position, i.e. that it was not opposed in principle to the introduction of a statutory levy.
This follows the announcement last week at GambleAware’s 5th annual Harm Minimisation Conference by Doctor Rosena Allin-Khan MP, Shadow Minister for Sport, that a future Labour Government would introduce such a statutory levy.
