On 7 February 2022, we reported on the reminder issued by the Gambling Commission to its licence holders to ensure that no advertising occurs on copyright infringing websites. You can download below a copy of that reminder.
On 9 March 2022, we published an update to that report, drawing attention to a press release published by the European Gaming & Betting Association (‘EGBA’), that you can also download below, in which it welcomed a 55% reduction in advertising from major gambling brands in the EU being placed on websites that infringe upon intellectual property rights and confirmed that it would continue to promote an EU initiative to further reduce IPR-infringing online advertising in the gambling sector
Last week (on 16 June 2022), EGBA and VIXIO Gambling Compliance hosted a webinar discussion entitled “Online advertising and intellectual property rights (IPR): how to promote responsible advert placement”. A video recording of the webinar is available on YouTube here.
Panellists in the webinar, moderated by VIXIO Gambling Compliance reporter Harrison Sayers, were
- Angélique Monneraye, Policy Officer, DG GROW, European Commission,
- Filip Petru, Gambling and Affiliate Compliance Director, White Bullet and
- Daniele Perrone, Senior Legal Advisor, EGBA.
They discussed the practical steps that gambling operators and their affiliates can follow to ensure that their advertising doesn’t appear on websites or apps that contain IPR-infringing content, including piracy websites which stream sports, TV, or movies.
The webinar was organised as part of EGBA‘s promotion of responsible advertising in the gambling sector and its support for the European Commission-led Memorandum of Understanding on online advertising and IPR.
