David Clifton is one of four legal experts interviewed by Robert Simmons for the lead article on today’s EGR Intel newsletter, entitled “Industry reaction: How will the decision to ban credit card gambling affect UK operators?”

David answers the following questions arising from yesterday’s announcement by the UK Gambling Commission of a credit card ban for for all forms of remote gambling (ie betting, gaming and lotteries) and for non-remote betting with effect from 14 April 2020:

  1. Do the changes go far enough?
  2. How will the ban affect revenues?
  3. The industry argued it used credit card gambling to help identify at-risk players. Was this a legitimate argument?

UPDATE: On 29 January 2020, the Gambling Commission published Guidance for society lotteries and ELMs on the credit card ban and GAMSTOP, the content of which will also be of interest to remote gambling operators in other sectors who receive recurring subscription payments by credit card from customers.
